Historically, BS7671 recognized two types of earth-leakage circuit breakers, a current-operated type and older version of voltage-operated type. However today we only recognized current-operated, Residual Current Device or better known as RCDs. It was an important protective device which used in electrical installations to save numerous lives. It was called because Residual Current Device because it works based on the residual current in a circuit.
